BATES HOLE CBC

A wide variety of species highlighted the annual Bates Hole CBC Jan. 1, 2004.  54 species were seen, 14 more than last year.  However, the numbers of two key species were off.  Only 14 Golden Eagles were seen, 2 less than last year and well below the high of 53 seen on Jan. 1, 1999.  The low number of Golden Eagles appears to be due to a poor rabbit population which is still recovering from the cyclical decline and the effects of the drought.  44 Greater sage-grouse were seen, down from last year's 147.  It is not clear whether the population has been hurt by the West Nile virus or has just moved elsewhere in search of a better food supply.  The grouse eat sagebrush in the winter and it has had several years of poor growth due to drought in the Bates Hole area.

The evidence from the count is that, in general, the West Nile virus has not done serious damage to our bird populations.  The count numbers of magpies and Black-capped Chickadees, two species known to be at risk regarding West Nile virus, were both in the normal range for this count, although the chickadee count was on the low end of normal.

The Bates Hole CBC is taken in a 15-mile diameter circle in Bates Hole, southwest of Casper.  Points near the boundary of the circle include the highways 220/487 junction, the flank of Muddy Mountain above the Bates Hole Cemetery, the crossing of highway 487 and Lawn Creek, and the Lusby public fishing area.  Murie Audubon Society members and friends participated in this year's count - Randy Bjorklund, Ann Hines, Jim Herold, Merlyn Herold, Jim and Gloria Lawrence, Kit Perry, Frank Odasz, Bobbie Roberts, Charles Scott, Dan, Stacey, Joe, and George Scott, and Kent and Meg Sundell.

Count Results:

ALBANY COUNTY CBC

The 104th Albany County Christmas Bird Count was held on December 20, 2003, with 15 participants.  It was the most pleasant count weather we have experienced in years, with a high of 48 degrees and only modest wind for most of the day.  40 species were observed on count day, tying our high count two years ago on Dec. 15.  Several species we usually see were missing (Downy Woodpecker, Northern Shrike, Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch, Pine Siskin,), but some unusual species added to the excitement.  The first Lewis’ Woodpecker ever on the count was observed on the eastern edge of the count circle in some limber pine.  A Western Meadowlark, seen only once before on the 1976 count, 8 American Goldfinch and 8 Wilson’s Snipe were all observed along Spring Creek in town. The 9 Song Sparrows was a high number for the CBC. Other interesting birds were 2 juvenile and 1 adult female Cooper’s Hawks (not together), and a Bald Eagle seen during count week.  American Crows were at an all-time high, with 343, compared to 304 last year and 123 two years ago.  Ravens numbered only 124, down from 198 last year.  European Starlings (297) were only half as numerous as in recent years.

NEBRASKA CBC RESULTS

SCOTTSBLUFF CBC

December 20, 2003

Fellow Birders,

I finally have the results of the Scottsbluff CBC.  18 competent birders and an unusually  nice weather day helped us tally the largest number of species ever--72, which beat last year's record of 70.  In addition, 5 Sandhill Cranes were see during the count week.  I've been compiling this count for 25 years or more, and I feel this is the best coverage we have ever had.  We reported 28,166 individuals.

We had 1 new species, a Carolina Wren--a very rare bird in this part of the state.  There were 4 species reported for the second time, and 15 species had a new high number.

As to the chickadee discussion--this is the 50th year for the Scottsbluff count, and we have seen chickadees each year.  The highest number was 75 in 1990, and the lowest was 8 in 1998.  We had 21 this year.  We had 7 parties, and only 3 of those reported chickadees.  Most of the birds (16) came from one party.  In 2002 there were 48, in 2001 there were 24, in 2000 there were 33, and in 1999 there were 25.  Most of us that bird here regularly feel like we aren't seeing many chickadees.  Without those 16 in one area, we would really have been down in numbers.  So interpret the data as you wish.

Local people were also watching Black-billed Magpies which most of us feel are decreased in number.  We had 50 this year.  Highest number was 148 in 1964 and lowest was 5 in 1976.  So maybe we aren't as low as we think.

Red-winged Blackbirds were down to 136 after a high last year of 6525.  Construction of a new highway has closed a feedlot that played host to all of those thousands last year.

Here is the complete list:

Great Blue Heron 5, Snow Goose 1, Canada Goose 12,738, Wood Duck 10  (high), Gadwall 9, American Wigeon 340  (high), Mallard 8,346, Northern Shoveler 5, Northern Pintail 48, Green-winged Teal 6, Canvasback 6  (high), Redhead 20  (2nd time)  (high), Ring-necked Duck 30  (high), Greater Scaup 1  (2nd time), Lesser Scaup 36  (high), Bufflehead 1, Common Goldeneye 209, Common Merganser 1, Bald Eagle 5 (2 adults, 3 immatures), Northern Harrier 3, Sharp-shinned Hawk 2, Cooper's Hawk 2  (high), Red-tailed Hawk 19, Ferruginous Hawk 1, Rough-legged Hawk 7, Golden Eagle 3 (2 adults, 1 immature), American Kestrel 60 (high), Merlin 3, Prairie Falcon 3, Ring-necked Pheasant 2, Sharp-tailed Grouse 4, Wild Turkey 90, American Coot 22 (high), Sandhill Crane (CW), Wilson's Snipe 1, Rock Pigeon 362 (high), Mourning Dove 63  (high), Great Horned Owl 2, Belted Kingfisher 7, Red-bellied Woodpecker 2, Downy Woodpecker 15, Hairy Woodpecker 4, Northern Flicker 42 (red-shafted 20, yellow-shafted 7, orange-shafted 11, unknown 4), Northern Shrike 3, Blue Jay 92 (high), Black-billed Magpie 45, American Crow 46, Horned Lark 424, Black-capped Chickadee 21, Red-breasted Nuthatch 13 (high), White-breasted Nuthatch 7, Pygmy Nuthatch 2, Carolina Wren 1  (1st time), Marsh Wren 2  (high), Townsend's Solitaire 19, American Robin 75, European Starling 3,352, Cedar Waxwing 2, American Tree Sparrow 87, Song Sparrow 17 (high), White-throated Sparrow 1  (2nd time), White-crowned Sparrow 14, Dark-eyed Junco 178 (Oregon 96, Slate-colored 107, unknown 65), Lapland Longspur 16  (2nd time), Northern Cardinal 4, Red-winged Blackbird 136, meadowlark species 14, Brewer's Blackbird 1, Common Grackle 4, House Finch 116, Pine Siskin 70, American Goldfinch 108, House Sparrow 677.

CRAWFORD

The Crawford, Nebraska was held December 19, 2003, below are comments and results.

Individual numbers were about average when compared to the previous 3 counts. Four new species for the count were found - Ferruginous Hawk, Northern Bobwhite, Eurasian Collared-Dove, and Marsh Wren. All but one pond was frozen over, but the White River was open. We were unable to find any waterfowl. Conversely, the Wild Turkey numbers were an all time high.
Black-capped Chickadee numbers, while high for the last four years, may just reflect the number of counters and the mild weather on the day of the count. When compared to the older counts (from 1974 to 1979) the Chickadee numbers are about one third to one half!! Only two Flickers were found and no Robins! Anyone that is interested in a complete Excel spreadsheet of all the Crawford counts, please email me and I can send it to you. Below is the tally for this year's count.

Bald Eagle, (Adults 4, Immatures 2), Northern Harrier 1, Red-tailed Hawk 4, Ferruginous Hawk 1, Rough-legged Hawk 2, Golden Eagle 1 Adult, American Kestrel 2, Prairie Falcon 3, Ring-necked Pheasant 7, Sharp-tailed Grouse 3, Wild Turkey 118, Norhern Bobwhite 7, Rock Pigeon 112, Eurasian Collared-Dove 8, Downy Woodpecker 16, Hairy Woodpecker 5, Northern Flicker 2, Horned Lark 25, Blue Jay 6, Black-billed Magpie 19, American Crow 70, Black-capped Chickadee 52, Red-breasted Nuthatch 2, White-breasted Nuthatch (CW), Pygmy Nuthatch 6, Marsh Wren 1, Townsend's Solitare 1, Northern Shrike 2, Europeon Starling 211, American Tree Sparrow 160, Song Sparrow 57, Oregon Junco 64, Slated-colored Junco 3, Dark-eyed Junco 31, Red-winged Blackbird 2, House Finch 7, Red Crossbill 25, Pine Siskin 1, American Goldfinch 119, House Sparrow 140.

Lake McConaughy CBC

The thirteenth annual Lake McConaughy Christmas Bird Count was held on Sunday, December 21, 2003 - 18 field birders and 13 feeder watchers.  The number of individuals is a record for this count, and the species total is well above the average of 88 species and second only to the record of 108 species seen in 2002. Unusual finds this year included four species that were new to the count (Black-headed Gull, Little Gull, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, and Rock Wren) plus several rare waterbirds and lingering passerines. An additional four species of birds, marked by a “CW” on the list below, were recorded during the week of the count (18-24 December), but not on count day. The high species total was probably the result of a fairly mild fall, very little ice on any of the water bodies, and excellent weather during the count. However, a group of feeder watchers, coordinated by Bill Huntley, reported that numbers of birds at feeders were unusually low this year, perhaps the result of weather or other food supplies. Noteworthy misses on this year’s count included Sharp-tailed Grouse, Lapland Longspur, and Pine Siskin.

Participants on this year’s count included Henry Armknecht (Ovid, Colorado), Gordon Brown (Cary, North Carolina), Bob & Kathy DeLara (Scottsbluff), Stephen J. Dinsmore (Starkville, Mississippi-Count organizer), Dean & Phyllis Drawbaugh (Scottsbluff), Peter Frechtel (Denver, Colorado), Robin Harding (Gibbon), Helen Hughsen (Scottsbluff), Bill Huntley (Ogallala), Clem & Betty Klaphake (Bellevue), Kay Niyo (Evergreen, Colorado), Lanny Randolph (Gibbon), Tommie Rogers (Mound City, Missouri), Ross Silcock (Tabor, Iowa), and Mark Urwiller (Kearney).
