Here's a new project for people who bird in Wyoming!!!

Have you been keeping track of your Wyoming birds according to county?  For example, what is your life list total for Laramie County?  How about Natrona County? Or Fremont County or Big Horn County?

We have been talking with Andrea Cerovski (for those who don't know Andrea - she is the non-game bird biologist with Wyoming Game & Fish), and we are going to start keeping species totals for each of Wyoming's counties.  Some of you probably already do this for Nebraska or Colorado or some other state that keeps county lists.  We will set this up similarly to ABA's state totals.  If you aren't already doing so, start keeping lists for each county, then add up your total for each county at the end of the year. For each county that you have at least 125 for, send that total to us.

In January, we will organize everyone's totals and put them on the WYOBirds list serve.  We will also send the list totals to all the Audubon chapters to be put in their newsletters, and to anyone else who wants to see the results.  And of course, sharing our sightings will help all of us find more birds around the state.  Many states already do this and besides the competition, they have found that it also helps get all parts of the state covered better. Some of you will probably have 125-plus species for almost every county, while some of us will only be able to total 125 or more for one or two counties (we just have to work harder!).

Be sure to call the Murie Audubon Bird Hotline to find out what has been seen and to report what you've seen (265-BIRD in Casper, or 1-888-265-BIRD outside of Casper, toll-free), or check the WYOBirds list serve.  Wyoming only has 23 counties, but each county has a lot of possible places to find birds.

To start things off, anyone who knows their county totals up through December, 2002, can send them in now - we can then publish these lists and you all can see who has been out searching all the nooks and crannies for Wyoming's birds. Send your totals to Bruce and Donna Walgren, 4311 S. Center St., Casper, WY 82601; or email to bwalgren_AT_coffeyDOTcom, or for more information, contact us.

Thanks!! and Good Birding!!
